Khaled Hosseini, destacado novelista afgano-estadounidense, nació el 4 de marzo de 1965 en Kabul, Afganistán. Hijo de un diplomático afgano y una profesora de farsi e historia, su familia se trasladó a París en 1976. Tras la invasión soviética de Afganistán en 1979, obtuvieron asilo político en Estados Unidos, estableciéndose en San José, California, en 1980. Hosseini cursó estudios superiores en Estados Unidos, obteniendo una licenciatura en Biología de la Universidad de Santa Clara en 1988 y un título de médico de la Universidad de California en San Diego en 1993. Ejerció como internista desde 1996 hasta 2004, compaginando su práctica médica con su emergente carrera literaria.
